
Fixing Those Pesky Cold Spots in Glass Annealing
If you’ve ever worked with complex glassware, you know the frustration of “cold spots.” You pull a piece out of the kiln and realize some parts just didn’t get the heat they needed. Here is the problem: standard IR lamps throw heat in every direction. It’s a 360-degree blast. Which means half of your expensive energy is just heating up your kiln walls instead of your glass. It’s a waste. The fix is actually pretty simple. We use custom aluminum reflectors to catch that wasted energy and bounce it right back onto the workpiece. Why aluminum? Because it’s great at reflecting short and medium-wave IR. We don’t just use flat sheets, either. We shape them into precise curves—parabolic or elliptical—to force those rays to converge on one spot. It turns a general glow into a focused beam. Suddenly, you’re hitting the exact areas where the glass usually stays too cold. A quick word of caution on the setup. We design these reflectors to wrap around the IR tube, but there’s a catch: the lamp can never actually touch the metal. If it does, the thermal stress will crack the quartz envelope. That’s a mess nobody wants to clean up. The beauty of this is that you get way more heat intensity without having to crank up the wattage. But keep this in mind—because these reflectors are so good at trapping heat, things can get sweaty around the lamp ends. If you’re packing high-wattage tubes into a tight space, make sure your cooling fans are up to the task. Otherwise, you’ll burn out your terminals. Dealing with the “impossible” shapes. Think about narrow-neck flasks or weirdly shaped containers. A flat heater just can’t “see” inside those recesses. That’s where we angle the reflectors to basically shoot the IR energy deep into those gaps. It kills off the temperature gradients that cause internal stress in the glass. The best part? Your cycle times drop. You aren’t stuck waiting an hour for the coldest sliver of glass to catch up to the rest of the piece. Everything hits the target temperature together. It just works.
