
Fixing Those Annoying Cold Spots in Glass Annealing
If you’ve ever worked with glass that has a weird shape—deep curves, tight necks, or odd angles—you know the headache of “cold spots.” Standard IR lamps are pretty basic. They shoot heat in a straight line. If the heat can’t “see” a part of the glass, that spot stays cold. When you’ve got that kind of thermal tug-of-war happening inside the piece, the glass gets stressed. And stressed glass? It breaks. Usually at the worst possible moment. The secret is in the gold. We use gold-coated reflector plates to stop all that heat from just disappearing into the furnace walls. Now, you might wonder why gold. It’s not about the bling. Gold just happens to be way better at bouncing medium and long-wave IR radiation than aluminum or steel. By tucking these plates behind the heating elements, we’re basically trapping the energy and throwing it back at the glass. It turns a narrow beam of heat into a warm, enveloping hug for your workpiece. For the really tricky shapes, a flat heater just won’t cut it. We actually curve the reflectors to match the profile of your vessel. Because the gold plating doesn’t soak up the energy, the IR rays can actually “wrap” around the glass. It reaches the deep shoulders and those narrow necks where direct light usually fails. It’s a relief to finally get full coverage without guessing. A few things to keep in mind. These reflectors pack a punch. Since the heat density is so much higher, you can often dial down the lamp wattage and still hit your soak temperature. It’s more efficient. But there’s a catch: gold is soft. If your shop is full of abrasive dust or corrosive gases, that mirror finish can get chewed up. Once it scratches or degrades, you lose that reflectivity. You’ve got to keep those plates shielded from physical hits and chemical scrubbers if you want them to last. The best part? When the reflectors are aligned right, you don’t have to wait forever for the heat to slowly crawl into the cold spots via conduction. You’re hitting the glass directly with radiation. It cuts your cycle time down and just… works.
